The National Investor was founded in 1996 by Chris Temple. The National Investor focuses on market timing and stock selection within any of the major asset classes. The newsletter gives special attention to gold and precious metals. The newsletter publishes two model portfolios. Temple’s approach relies on a combination of fundamental and technical analysis.

On July 21, 2004, Christopher L. Temple appeared in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin and was sentenced to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for a term of 72 months on each of two counts to run concurrently.  He previously pled guilty to one count of mail fraud in violation of 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1341 and one count of laundering of monetary instruments in violation of 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1956 (a)(1)(A)(I), both of which are Class C felonies.  On November 25, 2009, Christopher L. Temple was released from the custody of the Bureau of Prisons and is serving a three-year term of supervised release with the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office in the Western District of Wisconsin.

Chris Temple has admitted guilt in defrauding his money management clients. However, he claims that the length of his prison sentence was due to his involvement in far right politics. While in prison, Temple's newsletter was intermittently updated.

As of February 2010, Hulbert Financial Digest cites returns on the newsletter for the previous 12/36/60 months to date, 1 year 36.02%, 3 years 11.66%, 5 years 11.88%. Hulbert Financial Digest simulates the buying and selling of everything the letter recommends.
