While studying mathematics at UC Berkeley, Nate Pile worked with Jim McCamant, founder of The Medical Technology Stock Letter. He was named Associate Editor of The Medical Technology Stock Letter's sister newsletter, "The AgBiotech Stock Letter." Pile began publishing Nate’s Notes in 1995. Pile describes his letter as "specializing in long-term small-cap growth stock investment ideas for the small individual investor."

Pile says he first screens for stocks with strong fundamentals. Most companies Pile recommends have a market capitalization of no less than $250 million. He does this in acknowledgment that it is large institutions, such as mutual funds and pension funds, which move share price.

Pile looks for stocks expected to have long term growth. Pile has said, "I always ask myself a question that I believe I first saw posed in a book on Warren Buffet's investment philosophy, namely: 'If the stock market closed for five years and we could not trade this stock, would we still be happy owning it five years from now?' There has to be something compelling about the long-term growth prospects of the company for me to even consider putting it in the newsletter..."

Pile makes further decisions about a stock after it has been added to a recommendation portfolio, based on a combination of fundamental and technical analysis. Pile places heavy value on upside momentum measures.

Nate's Notes is often among the top five newsletters according to Hulbert Financial Digest. As of February 2010, Hulbert Financial Digest cites returns on the newsletter for the previous 12/36/60/120 months to date, 1 year 101.55%, 3 years 2.39%, 5 years 9.22%, 10 years .53%. Hulbert Financial Digest simulates the buying and selling of everything the letter recommends.
