James Stack focuses his InvesTech Research Portfolio Strategy newsletter on U.S. and foreign markets. The letter generates two model portfolios based on a combination of fundamental and technical analysis. One model is made up of stocks and the other is made up of mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds. InvesTech Research began publishing its first newsletter in 1982.
James Stacks' history includes moving to 100% cash before the October 1987 crash. In January 1991 he called the beginning of the 1990's bull market. In the late 1990s, he gave the warning that the high-tech bubble would burst and spread to other market sectors. More recently, on March 2009 he wrote, "We believe the stock market is approaching a buying opportunity of a lifetime."
In his December 18, 2009 appearance on the Nightly Business Report segment, "Market Monitor", Paul Kangas introduced him by saying, "In March you told us that the building blocks were in place for a new bull market and the market made a bottom on March 9. Then in August when you were with us, you told us that the bull would continue to strengthen and boy has it ever. I compliment you on those excellent calls."
As of February 2010, Hulbert Financial Digest cites 12-month returns on the newsletter, 1 year 46.25%, 3 years 4.72%, 5 years 6.57%, and 10 years 7.50%. Hulbert Financial Digest simulates the buying and selling of everything the letter recommends.
